Salah ad-din ACCOMPANYING his uncle shirkuh on an envoy

At an early age, Saladin showed a keen interest in military matters, and he was known for his physical prowess and bravery. He accompanied his uncle, Shirkuh, who was a general in the service of the Muslim ruler of Egypt, on several campaigns, including the conquest of Syria.

When Shirkuh died in 1169, Saladin succeeded him as the commander of the army, and he became the vizier of the ruler of Egypt, the Fatimid caliph al-Adid. However, Saladin's position was not secure, as there were other factions within the caliph's court who opposed him. In 1171, Saladin seized power from the caliph and established himself as the ruler of Egypt, effectively ending the Fatimid dynasty.
